나는 주체할 수 없는 상실감에 지친 깊은 밤, 창밖 플라타너스의 넓은 잎들이 바람에 흔들리며 내는 소리에 큰 위로를 받았던 적이 있다. 그것은 단순한 위로를 넘어 자연이 의인화되어 내 심연까지 어루만져주는 기적 같은“사건”이었다. 길게 늘어선 가로수는 그날따라 강하게 불던 바람에 거대한 파도처럼 일어서서 우주 전체를 진동시키는 소리로 나를 깨웠다. 내게 부여된 모든 사회적 역할을 내려놓고, 내 몸의 감각을 통해 실재와 마주하던 그 찰나의 순간은 우리가 일상적 삶 안에 느끼는 욕망과는 다른 근본적인 자유를 갈망하게 했다. 보이지 않는 근원적 욕망을 드러내는 것은 오직 예술의 언어로 이야기될 수 있다고 생각한다. 그래서 나는 작업을 통해 다시 그 찰나의 순간으로 들어갈 수 있길 희망하고 또 희망한다. 우리는 사회에 적응하기 위해 타고난 본성과는 다른 타자를 내면화하고 살아간다. 하지만 껍데기를 벗고 내 몸의 감각으로 우주와 조우할 때 느끼는 자유는 사회화 이전의 자아, 즉 동심의 상태에서 경험하는 날 것의 자유와 같았다. 나는 동심을 지향하며 자연의 에너지를 빌어 인간의 경직된 심리를 회복하고자 한다. 동심의 세계에선 타인은 경쟁상대가 아닌 놀이의 대상이고 모두가 평등하다. 나는 놀이의 메커니즘를 통해 서열화 된 인간중심주의를 비틀고 억눌리지 않은 인간본성의 자유로운 유희충동을 이야기하고 싶다. 기존의 상식적인 인식은 힘을 발휘하지 못하고, 내가 대상을 바라보고 지각한대로 자유롭게 변형되고 새로 만들어진다. 상상력을 무기삼아 모든 것이 가능한 신나는 놀이가 되면서 우리를 위축시키는 것들로부터 유쾌하게 벗어날 수 있다. 이 경험은 딱딱하게 굳어진 일상을 환기시킬 힘을 갖는다. 열린 감각으로 자연 안에서 호흡할 때 난 거대한 우주와 연결되어있다는 느낌이 든다. 인간과 전 존재들이 다양한 교차점을 만들어내며 왠지 한 번도 보지 못한 낯선 존재와도 소통이 가능할 것 같은 기분이다. 인간중심의 이원적 세계에 미처 편입되지 못한 무수한 것들이 만들어내는 틈 사이로 들어가, 난 세상 모든 존재와 놀 수 있다. 자연에서 얻은 이미지를 조합해서 인간도 식물도 동물도 아닌 오방색 눈을 가진, 내가 그리는 형상들은 나와 함께 놀 친구이자 내안의 수많은 타자 중의 하나이다. 탱크나 전투기, 화폐가 등장하는 난장 같은 놀이터를 나와 함께 활보한다. 사회화이전의 자아가 갖는 자유로우면서도 자연과 조화를 이루는 이상적 모습은 우리 전통의 민화에서 볼 수 있는 미학적 정서와도 닿아있다. 나는 신표현주의의 감각을 통한 중층적 의미구조를 계승하며 인간과 자연을 해학적으로 그려낸 민화를 발판삼아 인간본성의 자유로운 유희충동을 현대적 조형언어로 풀어내고자 한다. 나는 군인이었던 아버지 덕분에 군부대가 있는 산속에서 유년시절을 보냈고 지금은 화려한 도시, 서울에서 살고 있다. 내 기억에 새겨진 군사문화와 오늘날, 첨예한 갈등을 일으키는 자본주의의 거대담론은 자유로운 유희충동 아래 부서지고 다시, 다르게 세워진다.
I would like to express through play the oppression and tension that an individual goes through being socialized by borrowing natural energy. The natural purity where all values or ideologies are excluded has the power of enabling us to contemplate the present by shaking our rigid eyes. I try to find a solution for the methodological problem for using it through the mechanism of play, the most nonpolitical act. I, who was a member of a military family, was brought up under totalitarian military culture. Now I am experiencing the sharp conflict of capitalism, a war without a gunshot. Such absurd culture stiffens our society, divides it into the haves and have-nots, changes it into the relation between master and servant and the relation of superiority or inferiority, and swallows all diversities. Because all beings are different, they need one another and can get out of the logic of superiority or inferiority. If we decide our own nature by others' eyes, we are deprived of the freedom we can enjoy by our existences themselves. All living things are the unique existences in this world where each of them has its own nature. I am much interested in observing "the nature" separated and oppressed by uniformly forced social demands and retrieving "one’s childish innocence". If we look at others with children's eyes, they are not the objects of competition but the ones of play. My work is to try to change into play the conflict coming from such duality and the oppressive situation. Play is a kind of deviation, which enables me to be reconciled with tense unconsciousness. I do not try to dismantle or judge the mechanism of social oppression, but long for the human nature which is naive and romantic before knowing the evil intrinsic to such ideology. The individual differences derived from each individual person's nature revealed freely cause us to be paradoxically equalized. The childhood I spent romping about in the place where a military unit was in the mountain is carved as the memory that I exchanged with the world with the most liberal and open sense before being socialized. It gets me to endlessly dream of a transcendental idea. The nature where any cognitive judgment is insignificant and where all individuals are themselves endowed with their own positions is a good pleasure resort to me as the ideal model of showing a harmony of variety. I hope that all giant epics that transform "one's childish innocence", the pure nature of being, will become not elements of conflict but instruments of play having no more coercive power and result in the harmonious coexistence between all kinds of heterogeneous things including the worldly and the unworldly, absurd reality and romantic ideal.
