Kang Yi Soo
새는 우리주변에서 볼 수 있는 흔한 동물들 중의 하나이며 신화나 설화 그림 등 다양하게 우리와 같이 살아가는 친숙한 동물이다. 또한 새가 주는 이야기의 의미뿐만 아니라 조형적인 아름다움을 나타내는 소재로서도 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 나는 작업을 해오면서 인간의 모습보다는 주로 동물의 형상을 통해 인간의 내면을 표현해 보고자 하는 시도를 많이 해왔다. 현실에 존재 하지 않는 상상의 동물들 즉 상형문자에서 나타나는 도식화된 동물의 디자인들과 수많은 인간의 생각과 흔적들이 담겨진 기호적인 것에서 형상화 하는 작업들을 하기도 하였다. 지난 개인전부터 단순한 계기로 새를 소재로 한 작업을 하게 되었는데 새들의 모습을 통해 우리주변의 인간 군상들의 내면을 투영해 보는 작업을 해보았다. 그런데 의도와는 다르게 새가 주는 상징의 의미보다 형태에서 오는 시각적 재미에 만족해야 했다. 나 자신 조차도 새를 소재로 작업하면서 심오한 철학과 복잡한 의미로 표현하기 보다는 친근하고 예쁜 인형이나 애완동물 같은 캐릭터의 모습이 더 가슴에 와 닿는 것 같았다. 다만 재료가 좀 부드럽고 가벼운 재료가 아닌 철과 돌로 만들어져 투박하고 우악스런 면이 없지 않으나 이질적인 재료간의 결합과 조합은 최대한 다양한 색과 형상으로 나타내고자 하였고, 재료들의 질감 표현과 나름대로 변형된 양식화된 새의 형상들로 표현 하고자 했다.
Birds are one of the common animals that we see around us, and they are familiar animals that live with us in various ways, such as in myths and fairy tales. In addition, it has an important meaning not only as the meaning of the story given by the bird, but also as a material that expresses the formative beauty. During my work, I have made many attempts to express the inner side of a human being through the form of an animal rather than a human figure. I also worked on the designs of imaginary animals that do not exist in reality, that is, the designs of schematic animals that appear in hieroglyphs, and the symbolic ones that contain countless human thoughts and traces. Since my last solo exhibition, I have been working on birds as a subject for a simple occasion. However, contrary to the intention, I had to be satisfied with the visual fun that comes from the form rather than the meaning of the symbol the bird gives. Even myself, working with birds, seemed to touch my heart more with friendly and pretty characters such as dolls and pets rather than expressing them in a profound philosophy and complex meaning. However, the material is made of iron and stone rather than soft and light materials, so it has a rough and ugly side. I wanted to express it in shapes.
