세계 어느 도시를 가도 익숙한 간판들을 마주치게 되는 것이 요즘의 현실이다. 정치적 이데올로기의 시대가 가고, 한 동안 우리는 지구촌이라는 새로운 공동체의 형성을 위해 많은 노력을 해왔다. 그 과정에서 우리는 국가와 민족 간의 경계선마저도 초월하여 서로 다른 집단 사이의 관계 맺기를 통해 스스로에게 세계시민이라는 새로운 지위를 부여하게 되었다. 그러나 어느 때 부터인가 또 다시 경계선을 만드는 움직임이 새롭게 보이고 있다. 이것을 우리는 과거로의 회귀가 아닌 새로운 미래의 모습으로 받아들이게 된다. 이렇듯 우리는 늘 현재와는 다른, 보다 나은 세계를 꿈꾸며 그것을 실현시키고자 수많은 시행착오를 반복하며 나아가고 있다. 나는 과연 우리가 꿈꾸는 새로운 세계, 이상향이 정말 새로운 것인지, 실은 새로움을 가장한 채 익숙한 패턴으로 반복되고 있는 것은 아닌지 묻고 싶다. 사회가 복잡해질수록 우리가 사용하는 상징과 기호체계들은 정교해진다. 지도, 시계, 문자, 기호 등 은 모두 공인된 "약속"이다. 이러한 약속체계들은 정해진 규칙을 벗어나면 고유의 역할이나 그 의미를 잃게 된다. 이런 이유로 문자들과 지도, 기호의 이미지들을 다루면서 나는 기호의 의미를 배제한 체 오로지 시각적인 도구로만 사용하였다. 지도를 분해하였다가 다시 이어 붙이고, 문자를 해체하였다가 재조립하는 과정을 거치면서, 또한 여러 문자들이 서로 섞이면서 문자와 지도는 고유의 형상을 잃어버리고 전혀 다른 새로운 이미지로 재탄생 된다. 이렇게 생겨난 이미지는 새로운 신선함의 느낌으로 다가오기도하고 생경한 어색함으로 느껴지기도 한다. 사실 나는 이러한 해체와 조합의 과정을 통하여 내가 느끼는 세계화라는 현상에 대하여 이야기하고 싶다. 지구촌이라는 단어가 상용되는 현재의 시대는 각 민족국가 간의 경계가 희미해진 만큼 독창성이나 고유성을 확보하기란 쉽지 않다. 세계화란 슬로건 아래 각 국의 관계가 더욱 밀접해진 요즘은 시간의 흐름 속에서 때로는 흘러가는 것이 시간이 아니라 시간으로 경계 지어진 또 다른 지도상에서 내가 움직이는 것이 아닌가 하는 의문을 품게 된다.
All the things such as a map, a clock, a character and a sign are officially approved "promises". Such promise systems come to lose their proper roles or meanings if they get out of given rules. For such a reason, while I dealt with the images of characters, maps and signs I used them only as visual instruments excluding their meanings. Through the processes where I disassembled and rearranged maps and where I disassembled and reassembled characters, various characters mixed with one another also made characters and maps lose their proper forms and reborn as totally different new images. The images emerging in this way feel new and fresh as well as crude and awkward. But interestingly when I see all the things disassembled and mixed with one another I come to see that there is another order in them ironically. Always longing for what is new can possibly be said to be human instinct. However, one ignores the rules and disassembles the existing ones to find what is new, but comes to find another rule eventually. In fact, through such a process of disassembly and assembly I want to talk about the phenomenon of globalization I feel. In the present age when the word of a global village is commonly used and when the boundary between ethnic states becomes unclear, it is not easy to secure originality or authenticity. In the recent days when nations have closer relations with one another under the slogan of globalization, I do not sometimes feel as if time flowed in the flow of time but wonder if I move on another map bounded by time.
